WHAT ARE LEARNING DISABILITIES?

A learning disability is defined as a problem in one or more of the basic psychological processes involved in understanding or in using language, spoken or written, which may manifest itself in the ability to listen, think, speak, read, write, spell or do mathematical calculations. Problems in concept development, judgement, reasoning and organization of thought may well continue into adulthood despite intervention measure in childhood and adolescence.

OUR STUDENTS HAVE...

Been underachieving. Difficulty in reading but a whiz at math or vice versa. Short attention spans. Letter/number reversal or places them in wrong sequence. Poor hand/eye coordination, especially in writing/drawing. Difficulty in following directions. Hyperactivity. Impulsive behavior. Difficulty in telling time or right from left.

The Dreams are Free School was created to educate children with average or above intelligence who have learning disabilities including dyslexia.

Our students are of average or above average intelligence with a learning disability which presents needs that cannot be adequately met in a regular school setting. These students are free from any primary emotional, social or behavioral disorders.

We are not a V.E. (varying exceptionalities) setting and we are not staffed to meet the needs of students with behavioral disabilities.

The ultimate objective is to help each student develop his/her unique potential concentrating on the development of personal strengths.

We are a non-graded, non-labeling environment with continuous progress emphasis and multi-sensory teaching methods. Concentration is on providing a nurturing, caring, calm environment with personal attention and individualized academic structure for each student, based upon their specific needs and abilities.

Dreams Are Free focuses on children ages 6 - 14 (grades 1 through 8).

Dreams are Free is a faith-friendly Catholic school and is located at Bishop Nevins Academy at the corner of Fruitville Road and McIntosh Road in Sarasota, Florida. We believe each child is created in God’s image with varying abilities and gifts to share. We celebrate the uniqueness of each child.
